In the olden days they would take the springs out side and catch it on fire. I am not sure how they treated the matress though.

You need to wash clothes in hot water and dry in hot temperature. The dryer will kill them. You need to do this to all clothes, linen. After you do this, put the clothes in plastic bags that zip up. That way more bugs can’t infest the clothes and linen you have already treated.
Also, if you want to save your mattress, you need to put it in a plastic liner that zips up, closing completely. The bed bugs will die in one year.

Bed bugs can live without blood for over one year. You may need to get a professional who kills bugs for a living, who has experience killing bed bugs b/c not all bug killers know how to do this.

Those nasty buggers can be very hard to get rid of because they are so good at hiding, not just under the mattress either. You better read the info in this link from Harvard University to help you out:

Make sure that the bedsheets are kept clean and the person in the bed has good hygiene. Bed bugs are attracted to dead skin cells that fall off and are trapped in sheets, mattresses, and box springs. Believe it or not, there are always bed bugs on your bed, but most are small and hard to see.
