Is it safe to buy used clothes?

in Bedbug Questions

Question by elaine c:
Is it safe to buy used clothes?

I have heard some people say it’s not safe to purchase clothes or linens from the salvation army stores with the bedbug epidemic in ny.
I have been told by employees that clothes are washed before sale.
What do you think?
No goodwill stores in my area . Wish there was.

Rinse, and you’re fine. Ever heard of Goodwill?

Of course it is safe! It is always a good idea to wash clothes before you wear them. You know you can actually see bed bugs? So you would see them on the clothing, but no matter, they don’t live on clothing, they live near beds and feed on human hosts at night, hence the name.

Well, I would be in big trouble, because I buy almost all my clothes secondhand, the only things I don’t are underwear or lingerie (I just think its gross) and stuffed animals(Unless they can be washed, because of lice). But I have bought a comforter and pillow cases that looked new, I washed them all on the hot cycle, and dried it on the hot setting in the dryer. Wash before use, no worries.

It is totally safe to buy clothing from thrift stores. I have done it for years for my kids and grandchildren. However, they need to be washed, not just rinsed before wearing. I don’t know what employee told you that the clothes are washed before being sold, but they are not. My daughter worked at a thrift store and friends have worked at salvation army and goodwill and the clothes that are dirty or damaged are thrown away. These clothes are sorted and put on the racks.
