First, be very sure that the new renter did not move the bedbugs into your property. They could have been in the furniture or clothing. The bad news is that if the bedbugs are there, you have to have a good company fumigate the entire area. The good news is that if he moved them in, he has to pay for the fumigation.

This just happened to a friend of mine and in her lease it stated that if there was a “heavy infestation” that the landlord would cover the cost. The landlord did, and it cost $ 700 for a spray company to professionally fumigate.

But the cost to my friend is still very high, she ended up throwing out a queen size bed, 3 twin beds and then the cost to clean and everything along with cleaning and drying the drapes, bed linens, along with everything else you have to clean to try to get rid of them…..I’ve even heard of people throwing out furniture because they’ve had such a hard time getting rid of them they crawl down in the wood frames. She is now sleeping on air mattresses for fear of buying new beds and reinfesting. She’s been pulling her hair out to get rid of them

The bedbugs can come from a neighbors house, if you live in townhouse, condo or multi family housing where they can pass through rafters. Talk to the neighbors to see if they’ve seen any. also , They can come from if you go on vacation and get them from a hotel room bring them home in your bag.

There’s lots of literature on the internet about how to get rid of them, and just having a spray company come in is not the only answer. Your renters have lots of work to help get rid of them and keep them from coming back .
