Question by seven nyne:
are bedbugs common in rental furniture?

I am going to be living in las vegas for a few months and am planning on renting from a company there. They say everything is sterilized and what not, but I’m really scared of bedbugs. Are they real common in rental furniture? Should I buy some special covering so I don’t get bit? I don’t want to buy new stuff because why buy if I’m only staying for 4mths right? Any thoughts??

Well, how about fleas?

Sterile doesn’t mean a thing to unhatched eggs.
In order for them to be killed, they need to use high heat or chemicals.

Ask them “how” they sterilize them.

Bed bugs are common period, not just in furniture. They’re apparently in all 50 states and, if you do a search on the net, not uncommon in Vegas hotel rooms. But you can drive yourself crazy worrying about this kind of stuff. Economically you’re making the right choice about renting if you’ll only be there a few months. Take the rental company’s word for it that they’re being careful with their furniture, relax, and have a good time in your new digs.

I bet they really do sterilize them, because laws govern the commercial sale and rental of used furniture, and heat treatment is the usual sanitation. Some people have said that the same trucks transport fresh furniture with return furniture, and I suppose you couldn’t rule out cross-contamination in that way. If you rented in the summertime, the heat of the moving truck alone is most likely enough to kill bedbugs, it only takes 120 -125 degrees F. for 20 minutes to kill bedbugs.
