Question by Isles 4 Cups:
What are the chances of bedbugs being spread to my car and home?

I’m picking up a girl for a date on Monday. She just informed me that she’s suffering from a bedbug infestation in her home that she must have picked up at work from a local hospital. What are the chances of her bringing one of these little guys into my car and infesting my car and by extension, me bringing that into my home?

Oh gross!! It is possible if they are on her or her clothes just as easily as she caught them and brought them to her house she can bring them to you. Maybe you should take her car tonight…

I researched Bedbugs a few months back and found out that they can travel in shoes under the padding and in the seams of purses and backpacks, so be careful at the gym too with your backpack. My suggestion is to not bring those things into your bedroom. But to take shoes off at the door and leave backpacks and purses far from your bed.

Bedbugs are attracted to the carbon dioxide that we breathe out, similar to the way mosquitoes are, so if they can stay close to their meal (which is you and I), then all the better for them. Yes, it is possible that you could get them, but only if they are on her somewhere and that they decide to exit into your car and find you later. Again, your chances of bringing them home would be remote, a few reasons, bedbugs like to find crevices to hide in preferably wood, and there is no wood in your car. Hot weather that happens in a car by the sun warming up the interior can be sufficient to kill them too, remember they are full of blood, which to my understanding is one reasons mosquitoes stay out of the sun.

I just hope you don’t end up with them, but if you do, know that a good certified and qualified exterminator might cost a bit more, but they do a great job in getting rid of them, and unless you spend a lot of time in your car, the chances of bringing them home is remote.

I had my first ever experience with bedbugs, which I had picked up bedbugs room a hotel I stayed at for a marathon I had gone to, and within about 3 weeks I had sure signs bedbugs were in my room, they never affected my roommate, who slept 2 rooms over from me. I think they were caught early, and our exterminator came back for repeat sprayings at no additional cost. I am certain that when I brought my luggage back home, I took it to my room, and that is where they found their way to my bed and making their new home.

You could have her put all of her clothing and shoes and purse in the trunk in a bag…although that is probably not a great way to start off a date.

Most bed bug infestations occur after used bedding, mattresses are relocated to another residence. They come out at bedtime, looking for a victim, sleeping, for their next meal. They probably need blood to prepare for egg laying.
