How long do I have to worry about bed bugs?

Question by blackpippi:
How long do I have to worry about bed bugs?

I stayed at a hotel in London (The Rose Court Hotel) and my room had bed bugs. I was very careful when I came home. Made sure to wash all my clothes in hot water and dry them on hot. How many days/weeks/months do I have to worry before I know I escaped an infestation problem?

I don’t really know either, so I tried to find a website with information. Maybe this link will help answer your questions.

They hide almost anywhere including on your lugage and anything you put in tht infected room….A temp of 113 will kill the rascals but how do you get that temp all around your home including your switch plates should be up to an exterminator.

You will probably be wasting a lot of your valuable time looking for them and you may need to toss your mattress. I never had them and ran out of a major hotel when I discovered them in the side of the mattress….I never touch my luggage on the floor, bed etc before I check things out….Good luck because they have been known not to eat in over a year and still be in a place where we would least expect them to hide…

I am currently facing this problem myself. It was several months later that I first noticed the occassional strange bug bite on my arms and hands. After a lot of reading and asking around this is what I have learned:

– Bedbugs can live for about a year without feeding
– Cases of bedbug infestations are rising rapidly
– Bedbugs are very difficult to get rid of
– An infestation does NOT mean that your home is dirty
– Most professional companies are relatively inaffective at getting rid of an infestation of bedbugs

I advise that you treat the condition as if you had a mild bedbug problem for 2-3 months and hopefully that should stop any potential problem before it starts. There are several things you can do to help rid yourself of any potential pests:

– Wash all bed linen in a hot wash (60C) then keep stored in plastic bags until needed.
– Vacuum thouroughly once a week, including your mattress & all crevices.
– Steam clean your carpet and mattress if possible.
– Try sprinkling bicarbonate of soda on carpet and mattress before hoovering, as it dries up and kills pests.
– Declutter the room as much as possible, always make your bed and don’t leave piles of clothes because they hide in the folds.
