Is the apartment complex responsible for bed bugs extermination?

Question by Becky: Is the apartment complex responsible for bed bugs extermination?
I just moved into a new apartment about 2 months ago and have found bed bugs in there. I haven’t been in any hotels, or have had many people over, and my furniture is new so I know the bugs came from the apartment. Is it the apartments responsibly to get rid of them? I learned I am allergenic to the saliva of the bugs and break out in hives, so I cannot even stay there while the bugs are there, would they also need to take $ $ off my monthly rent or put me in a hotel. Thanks.

Legally, you must put your request in writing. The Land lord must then contact an exterminator or do it himself right away. The land lord has no control over how busy the exterminator is, so contacting them right away is all he is legally required to do at this time. The exterminator will make an appointment with you to come out and spray for the bugs.

If the Land Lord fails to respond to your written request, then you contact an attorney and file a civil suit against the Land Lord. If the court agrees with you, they can award things like money to stay in a motel until the problem is fixed.

In most parts of Canada the landlord lord is responsiable for get rid of the bugs. The sooner the better before it spreads. Make sure the landlord gets someone with experience in bed bug removal. Cost around $ 500 in Ontario.
