Apartment with bedbugs?

in Bedbug Questions

Question by truth:
Apartment with bedbugs?

There is an apartment in my building that has bedbugs. They found out 3 days ago. The building is sending and exterminator next week. No one in the building was informed. I told the president of our coop the day I found out and she assured me it would be taken care of the next day. I now found out that the building will only pay for 3 apartments to be exterminated. Anyone else in the building will have to pay for an exterminator themselves. Does this seem right? Why wait a week to take care of such a serious problem. Now the bedbugs can spread to other apartments. So why do we have to pay for an exterminator out of our own pocket when they took so long to take care of the problem?

If your apartment does not currently have bedbugs, then you don’t need an exterminator — they won’t prevent bedbugs. Bedbugs are extremely difficult to get rid of and it can take years, a simple visit by the exterminator isn’t likely to get rid of the problem. If you do have bedbugs in your apartment, then you need to contact the landlord and let him/her know that your apartment is infested. Bedbugs tend to travel on people and you can pick them up everywhere — think about a dark movie theater (which it’s now recommended you check your seat thoroughly with a flashlight before sitting). It’s unlikely that the bedbugs are going to travel to your apartment, unless you share items with this person or he/she visits your apartment.

Why on earth do you expect an exterminator to come to treat your apartment if you do not have bedbugs ? That’s about as stupid as putting out mouse poison when you don’t have any mice. As well, bedbugs do not move from unit to unit on their own. They travel on PEOPLE and CLOTHING. Unless the occupants of those infested units are guests in your unit, they’re not going to infest your unit.
