Question by afish:
We have bed bugs and live in pa. who is responsible to pay for extermination- us or the landlord?

We live in a 45 unit apartment building in bala cynwyd, pa – a suburb of philly. We don’t know of any other tenants who have this problem. We want the landlord to at the ery least pay for an inspection of the neighboring apartments. What is their legal responsibility and what is ours? So far we have pad the exterminators, but we’re not sure who should really be paying. Also, is this grounds for us to terminate our lease and move out? We would appreciate responses from people with personal exerience.

you obviously. its your bed is it not? bed bugs dont live in the walls or floors, they live in YOUR bed. its unfortunate that you have this problem, but if you need to have then exterminated it is up to you to have them exterminated, the land lord has nothing to do with your bed.

What do you think? Answer below.

If you can somehow prove the bugs were there before you moved in (not likely), then you can ask your landlord to take care of it. But, it sounds like it’s your fault, especially since no other tenants are experiencing the problem.

Your dilemma is not a basis for a constructive eviction.Contrary to others advice, bed bugs can and do live away from your bed. They only need to feed once ayear and then will ‘squirrel’ themselves away for another. If You have carpet-they will migrate to the underside crevices. When they are hungry ,they will travel 10’s of yards to find a subject. Talk to your neighbors for tell-tell signs of feeding. It may take a complete collaborative effort to eradicate these bugs.
