Question by schup35:
Bed Bugs. How to prevent.?

I live in a condo complex and my next door neighbor threw away his matress and box springs because he has bed bugs. What should I do to keep them from coming over to my place?
I don’t have bed bugs at this time. I want to know what will stop them from traveling from my neighbor’s condo to mine.

We all have “bed bugs’ to some degree.

Wash your linens in hot water frequently.

Spray your mattress and wash your bed linen weekly.

Use a plastic mattress protector or maybe one for allergens. I have a mattress pad over the plastic one so it doesn’t feel weird. Wash your bedding in hot water often.

Vacuum your carpets with powder which kills bedbugs and dust mites—easy to find.

Clean floors…..

Vacuum and clean sofas

Bedrooms……..

You can “bomb” the place for a quick fix BUT cover foodstuffs, Cd’s, computer…..Please don’t forget to take the dog, cat, hamster…..with you!

Wait for at least 24 hours before returning and then open all windows and turn on all bathroom/kitchen fans to ventilate.

Then get a cover–non-plastic for dust mites to go over your mattress and one over your box spring. Usually 80 bucks for a queen and 40 bucks for box spring. Get covers for bed pillows as well.

Wash all bed linen at least once a week in HOT water. Try not to use wool blankets since you can’t toss them into the washer.

The key to bed bugs is personal hygiene—cleanliness and household cleanliness.

If he has true bed bugs they will travel throughout the complex unless they are exterminated somehow.

Try using antibacterial bedspreads.

You can regularly vacuum your floors, furniture etc but inevitably they will find their way to your apartment. Because they can be the width of a playing card when they haven’t feed they can easily travel through the tiniest cracks and crevices. Encourage him to exterminate and have follow up visits.

I heard sprinkling powdered thyme affects them but you might want to try Drione Dust around your baseboards and door seals
