Question by allyson011:
Is there an effective repellent for bed bugs?

I will be staying in several different backpacker hostels but I am paranoid about bed bugs. I had one bit me on the forehead and the huge scar only went away after 3 years! Does anyone have tips on how to avoid them or any products I can use (for all nasty little insects if possible)?

Yes there are forms of protection – type “bed bug protection” in your search line and follow the leads to see which will work best for you in your travels. Basic inspection may be all that is needed.

Diatomacious Earth, put it under your mattress, along the walls, etc it will work. It’s non-toxic and not harmful in anyway, get the food grade, you can even eat it or use it for a facial. Lots of uses, but it definitely works for pests!

The spice thyme is noted to repel them. Keeping the suit cases off the floor and closed will help. Checking the mattress will tell you if there are bugs. Putting some DE diatomaceous earth, not the kind for swimming pools, around the base boards will get bugs if they crawl out of the walls. This can be found in the organic bug killers section in places like Lowes and Wal Mart. Comes in bags.

Diatomaceous Earth is not a good remedy for your situation..it takes days to kill the the bug and during that time it still will be actively feeding on you while you sleep…there are some DE products that are mixed with powdered pyrethrin, which would be a quick kill, or even better just the powdered pyrethrin, but the ones mixed with DE probably will be cheaper… probably take several cheap plastic bed wraps to put a barrier between you and the matress
