Male and female bed bugs are mating. Female crawls up the paintbrush but has trouble at first because attached male adds extra weight. She slips a bit until male uncouples and then female climbs up the chrome collar. Climbing is aided by the curved shaped of the metal collar: the female would have trouble climbing a flat, metal surface if it is polished. People think that bed bugs cannot climb up metal surfaces but they can. Many people also advocate metal bed frames versus wooden ones. Wooden frames have more crevices in which bugs harbor and oviposit.
