Shampoo the mattress as you would a rug. Spray it and keep it clean. Use lysol and such.

unfortunately bed bugs can live anywhere, in cracks, under wall paper, carpets etc. the only definite way to get rid of them is to get special spray and spray everywhere in the building.
with this being a youth hostel, i think it could be quite hard to do.

take all the bedding out of the room, get rid of the bed, boil the sheets and pillow slips throw the pillows out , get new ones have an exterminator come into the house to spray the place, then start fresh with a new bed and new sheets and blankets, get rid of anything that might have them, or their eggs in. Use a good carpet cleaner to also clean the carpet and de bug it too and also the drapes. nasty horrible little buggers they are…If you get scars from the bites they won’t go away so you’d better do something drastic
