Question by delorpompom:
Should I contact my landlord about the bed bugs in my apartment or an outside exterminator?

I’m fairly certain that I have bed bugs living in my apartment and I want to get rid of them, so is this my landlord’s responsibility or my own? Will I be required to pay for an exterminator if the infestation needs it or will my landlord?

that’s one of the benefits of renting a home. The landlord is responsible for the maintenance and upkeep. You just live.

Mostly bed bugs live only in mattresses and upholstered furniture so if you own those items, I guess you own the bug problem too. They may hide in baseboards and an exterminator could give you advise. I don’t think I would want my mattress sprayed with any bug killer. I would throw it out and get another if I could, after I talk to an exterminator.

If you have lived there for a while it is your responsibility because you are the one who let the dead skin the bed bugs like to eat build up. If you just moved in it is the landlords responsibility. Vacuum everything very good and use baking soda and vinegar like a thin paste and put in the most troubled areas let dry and then vacuum again. (baking soda can fade or even bleach so if you have dark carpets expect it to lighten up and may even look tie died for a while.

You can answer this. How long have you lived in the apartment? How long have you thought you have bed bugs?

If they’re recent, you pay.

Exterminators are the only way to get rid of them efficiently. Worth the money!

You should contact the apartment complex to hire a licensed pest control professional who can use an integrated pest control management approach. Infected furniture may have to be discarded depending on the recommendation of the pest control company.
