How long can Bed Bugs live in an empty hosue?

Question by Larry W:
How long can Bed Bugs live in an empty hosue?

My grandparents passed away, and their house was sold. The people who bought it rented it out, and it became infested with bed bugs. The house has now been abandoned for 10 months, and foreclosed upon. I have read that they (bedbugs) can live for around a year without a blood meal.

If I were to purchase this house back, and leave it sitting for another 6 months (during a sub freezing maine winter) will the infestation be alleviated? Will they all either starve or freeze to death?

I too have read that they can survive for 1 year with feeding.
In the meantime, why not have an exterminator check ouot the house and treat it for the bugs while no one lives there?

Yes, the bed bugs can go for a year without blood.

Freezing them will kill them.

You should have an exterminator come by and check to see if an infestation still exists. Yes they can go dormant for many months and even years.

years. my parents grew up with bed bugs, the bugs are still there even after years (2-3) without human contact. bed bugs are extremely difficult to completely remove.

since the place is empty anyways you mind as well get a strong pesticide in there. Most places don’t have the luxury of being empty so you can treat them. I would go with the strong stuff if i could. lol

yes they could still be there when you move in, though they could be easily eliminated by a professional before you move in. They would have bed bug lures (not sure if there are effective lures on the market for the homeowner) to see what sort of activity if any there might be.
