Question by Joe:
Is there an epidemic of bedbugs in the USA?

Someone I know had to call an exterminator for bedbugs. The exterminator claimed that there is currently an epidemic of bedbugs in America. Is this true and why might this have happened?

i read a few articles on yahoo and or aol news during this past year about bedbugs being wide spread epidemic.. it said check corners of matresses of hotel rooms 4 bugs and not 2 put your luggage on the floor.. use the luggage rack in room.. if you shop at a thrift store, wash clothes that you buy as soon as you get home.. i remember having bedbugs at our house when i was a child, not fun.. so hard 2 get rid of..and the smell of a kill was that of a stink bug.. if you ever killed a stink bug.. i wouldn’t visit those people you know that has them.. you could bring them home easy.. bummer eh ~

I honestly wouldn’t know if there’s an epidemic across the entire country. I’ve never seen any bed bugs in any of my homes. I believe they’re currently a problem in NYC. As to why this might have happened, the bites are confused with the bites of other insects so infestations aren’t always reported. Others become used to living with bedbugs. Then there are people who are reluctant to report infestations (embarrassment) because they incorrectly equate bedbug infestation with unclean conditions.

This was recently mentioned on the shows Monsters Inside Me on Animal Planet. The claim was the number of cases of bedbugs in the USA have skyrocketed over the past decade and they lay the blame on exterminators switching to less toxic insecticides lately that do not kill the bedbugs.
