Question by MthrNatures_Son:
What do I do if someone with bedbugs wants to come to my house?

We have this friend who lives far away. She has told us she has bedbugs despite numerous attempts to eliminate them. Now she is saying she wants to visit us in our new house. We are freaking out because we don’t want bedbugs or the eggs that may be on her clothes in our house.

How do I make my house bedbug safe if she, her clothes, and her luggage were to make a visit. Am I over reacting?

No, you’re not overreacting. A visit can lead to an infestation very quickly. Prevention is difficult. Treatment is even more difficult as your friend knows very well.

Having never dealt with bed bugs, I don’t know what to suggest except that your friend could promise to wash all the clothing she brings and wears in very hot water. She should keep it sealed in plastic until packing and putting it on just before she leaves, and she shouldn’t use luggage which has been sitting in the closet for months.

I’m sure she knows what she could be bringing into your home, but she can minimise the danger to you.

No, you’re not. And she is underreacting. She has to call an exterminator, which she obviously hasn’t. If she won’t, what makes you think she’ll abide by the preparations you would ask?

Tell her, “Sorry, but no. I’ll see you when you’re problem has been taken care of”
