bed bugs in my building
I live in Brooklyn, and I saw a sign that Bed Bugs are in the other half of my building. What can I do to prevent infestation?
I’m considering moving out, but I am locked into some serious rent control. So I’d like to stay.

Frank…with your many talents…you won’t have a worry in the world!
I’ve had bed bugs before and it isn’t pretty. I’m not sure how to prevent them, but this is how we got rid of them. First, we got some bug-killing powder from Home Depot (was it diatomaceous earth, maybe?) and sprinkled that all around the bedroom along the walls and under the bed. Then the management company came around and sprayed everything with some pesticide. Then, we turned off the window-unit air conditioner in the bedroom, opened the window, and closed the bedroom door. We left the living room air conditioner on. Being the heat of summer as it was, we let the mattress cook in the bedroom for a week while we slept on the couch in the living room. Just to be sure, we got a steam cleaner and steamed the mattress before we slept in it again. The bed bugs were gone after that.
