Question by deenah:
I’m moving to 77 huntley street at mount pleasant/bloor in toronto.is it a safe area?are there really bedbugs?

hello
I’m moving new to toronto and just signed my lease and paid my first months deposit for an apartment at 77 huntley street (right at the corner of mount pleasant and bloor) and has direct entrance to the Greenwin mall

the apartment looked great and its only 820$ /month for a bachelors and is super close to the subway.

I just googled the address of the apartment and it says the neighborhood is sketchy and that there are lots of reports of bedbug infestations in the building

Does anyone know if this is true? i find it hard to believe the neighbourhood is sketchy because the people seemed so nice in the area. and the apartment i saw looked clean, so i dont know if there really are bedbugs

any help? thoughts? anyone?

If its really that bad, i guess i can look for another apartment (although ill lose my 820$ deposit!)

Thanks!

Bedbugs can’t be ‘gone for good’ unless the ENTIRE block is done, including all of the tenant’s belongings, so that’s not going to happen. You rarely see bedbugs during the day, the only come out at night (middle of the night), and they hide really, really well.

I would avoid moving in at all costs.

LOVE the ‘thumbs down’ some are giving me. I’ll bet you either live there and don’t want people to know how gross it is, or you think you can get rid of bedbugs with a quick vacuuming and a shot of Raid. Ha ha!

There has been a problem with bed bugs in some of the downtown apartment builidngs. A friend (in a different building) had the problem last summer and she spent a lot of time and money (thousands of dollars, as she had to get rid of her carpets, bed, mattress set, some clothes, etc.) The problem is that the bugs can travel from one apartment to the next.

The “Bed Bug Registry” (link below) is a forum where people can write about their problems. You’ll see several buildings listed on the right side, where they’ve had problems with the pests. Sorry to say, but 77 Huntley is one of those buildings, and the comments from other tenants are very bad.

As to what you can do, think of it this way: which is worse: losing $ 820 or having to live with the aggravation of fumigations, possible re-infestations, discarding and then buying new furniture, clothes, etc.

The second link is for the Ontario Rental Housing Tribunal. Under the “Contact Us” section (top, centre), you’ll find a phone number. You might find it useful to call them to ask if your deposit can be given back to you if you decide not to take the apartment.

As for the area being “sketchy”, I think it’s an OK area. That wouldn’t be a concern of mine (and I live three blocks from there.) Good luck.
