Just a few years ago- placing the mattresses out in the sun would do the trick, And washing linens in hot soapy water.
I know that treating with an insecticide was not recommended.
Try to contact your county agent. They should have free printed literature that deals with this.

Extermination could take several treatments which will be very expensive or you could throw everything out (yes the furniture) & rebuy.
Either way its going to run into some $ $ $ $ $ .
Supposedly they are brought in thru terms of travel -like embedded in the seams of suitcases. Be cautious when traveling.
The spray you can buy to treat lice kills them, It takes repeat uses and can be pricey but it does work.
So I watched a show on them recently and it is highly recommended that you seek professional help for this. They can be in other areas and not just your bed they can be every where behind photos, on the bed in the carpet every where. They recommend getting ride of the bed or putting them in a special cover. I included a link for a web site that covers them.
