That is a nightmare. My sister and family had them and they returned. There is an epidemic of them now. They are everywhere and be careful that you don’t bring more home from the grocery store, to virtually any store, eating places, etc. You can’t get rid of them yourself. This requires a professional exterminator that must come back several times and also kill the eggs. Many people get rid of their mattresses, bedding and even furniture. They feed at dusk to dawn and they feed on your human blood. They can expand up to 8 times their normal size after feeding on blood. Look for red dots on mattresses and furniture. They hide in crevices too.
I feel for you, as I know what my sister and family went through for months. A professional is the only way and several visits, sorry to say. Put all your clothes in bags.
Back in the 1950’s, bed bugs were carried from ships, trains, planes and so forth. When they typically began using DDT, they were gone. Now it is illegal for us to use DDT and those horrible bugs are an epidemic. I’d leave , if you could until an exterminator kills all of them and their eggs. Make sure you don’t bring them back.

I was in semi denial about our bed bug problem because I never saw any. Until my daughter and I went on a midnight hunt for them. I stuffed mothballs in my sofa all around it and let it sit for a day. The next night we turn the lights off for about an hour. The mothballs ran them to the surface of the couch. Then turn them back on or get a flashlight and look in cracks, corners, tiniest cracks in sofas. When you see them spray them with 90% alcohol. Make sure you get the eggs too, the will white and looks like cotton pieces. I added rep pepper to my mixture of alcohol. Also, Make sure you vacuum real good once your hunt is over because the eggs are hard to kill. Also, I put the bugs in a jar, not the trash where they are able to get out. AND GET RID OF CLUTTER! Good luck! Something makes it kinda fun but creepy searching for them late at night and when you find them it’s very creepy. Very creepy when we found about 50 that night when I that we had none!! Something to think about!!!

The only GUARANTEED way is to hire an exterminator.

If anyone, here, ever said they had, I would never believe it.

You have two approaches, both will work (I’m the editor of an online guide to the bed bug problem called http://www.bed-bugs-handbook.com).

The first is to call in a professional firm like Terminix (1.877.291.4849). I like to start here since they offer a free in-home inspection and guarantee their work. This will give you a sense of where the bed bugs are hiding and the size of the infestation. (since this can be expensive, compare quote to a national membership group of local exterminators such as Service Magic – 1.877-233-1145).

If you want to do it yourself, it requires that several steps be followed using a combination of products including steps such as:

If you decide to treat your home yourself, you’ll need to purchase the products needed, and you’ll need to thoroughly inspect every inch of the room.

1. Vacuum the mattress, box spring and floor. Go around the baseboard and cracks with a vacuum crevice tool.
2. Use a mattress safe knock down spray to kill bed bugs and bed bug eggs. Be sure to treat the mattress, box spring, bed frame, end tables and other areas near and around the bed
2. Use a residual spray for longer lasting protection. Spray baseboards, in cracks and crevices.
3. Encase the mattress and box spring after the spray dries
4. Vacuum the room and steam all cracks/crevices if you have a hand steamer
5. Steam clean carpets
6. Wash all linen in hot water
7. Dispose of all clutter.

You can find detailed instructions in the resource.

Even pro exterminators sometimes struggle with bed bugs if the infestation is light you may be able to do it with lots of cleaning and steaming but if it is more advanced it will be very very difficult the sooner you get a bed bug expert in the less it will cost to eradicate

Hope this helps
