Question by LISA:
can cats transport bedbugs to another home?

i looked this up a few months back, and it seems to be that it is very unlikely. the bugs do not nest on an animal or human – they just show up to bite them and then leave. they usually are transferred to a new home when the hiding spot is in a piece of furniture or equipment that is moved into the new home. they dislike light and will usually jump off a person or animal when exposed to it, and so would not remain on the cat long enough to infest a new home. i suppose it is possible in a very strict sense, but the general consensus is that it is quite unlikely.

Yes. Bedbugs can be moved around very easy.

From everything I have read on the subject, it seems highly unlikely that cats (or dogs) can transport bedbugs. For whatever reason, cats and dogs are not preferred by bedbugs. That’s not to say they can’t be bitten if your house is infested, but they are not hosts for bedbugs and bedbugs will feed on a human rather than a cat or dog. It’s much more likely that the bedbugs will be transported via bedding or other household items. Do a Google search for “bedbugs and cats” to read several articles on the subject.

It would be very unlikely. Bedbugs, if you have them, would crawl out of the furniture and bedding to bite a cat, just as they would a human. But they don’t live/stay on the cat – they stay hidden in the folds of the fabric.

Although unlikely Bedbugs can feed upon pets. The pet itself wouldn’t transport the Bedbugs but if the cat has a bed or sleeps on a favorite chair or sofa, those items may be infested. Bedbugs do not live on their host but rather in the sleeping area of the host.
