I found 2 bed bugs in one of the rooms in my house. Does this mean im infested?

My husband found 2 bed bugs in his wardrobe in one of the rooms of our house. We looked every where and didn’t find any more. We cleaned up and haven’t seen one yet. I just want to know should I call an exterminator or just disinfect and not worry?

Many insects are confused with bed bugs so I’d make sure that the insect you caught is a bed bug, particularly since you didn’t find any more. I’d suggest either:

1. Call your local cooperative extension or University and see if they have a entomologist that could look at your sample. Given the bed bug problem, many local departments of health are also offering this service. You can also send a sample to the Harvard School of Public Health for evaluation (see resource for form)

2. You can call Terminix (1.877.291.4849) since they offer a free in-home inspection. They can confirm the type of insect you found, and recommend the appropriate treatment and related cost. Another good source of reputable pre-screened exterminators is Service Magic (877-233-1145).

Bed bugs multiple rapidly, so I’d take care of the problem as quickly as possible.

I would call an exterminator. If you found two, chances are there may be more. It’s better to be safe than sorry.

Disinfecting does nothing.

Try to determine why they would have been in the wardrobe. If it was because he’d recently traveled and may have brought them home, then completely clear the wardrobe of clothing. Launder and dry on hot what you can and take to the drycleaners for pressing with the rest. Vacuum up the empty wardrobe several times before reloading it.
