Question by Nets:
Bed Bugs- New apartment is infested. How do I get rid of them!?

I didn’t even think these bugs existed in the US!

I just moved into an apartment complex, and the place had little bugs crawling around. I asked my landlord to spray, and he did. But I’ve done some research now, and I know they are bed bugs and they need special treatment.

Is there anything I can buy to kill them and stop them from coming back? They must be in my neighbors’ apartments too.

HELP! I can’t even sleep in my own place. I’ve been staying at a friend’s.

hire an exterminator? if you dont have cats or dogs or anything, get this awesome stuff called RAID, actually i dont know if its for bedbugs but it kills roaches in seconds. maybe you can try spraying it all around cracks between the wall and floor and all that.

Vacuum and steaming help. .Bed bugs can hide behind loose wallpaper, in the crevices between carpets and walls, behind outlet covers, and inside light fixtures, smoke detectors, and even clocks.also if you raise the temperature high enough it will kill the eggs to.

You can get those small steam cleaners, like the steam buggy. Just go round the mattress with one of those, saves using horrible chemicals, i found it works really well, it will also clean up mattresses. Personally i would chuck the old mattress and get a new one.
Get a carpet cleaner and give the place a good going over with that.
One thing to do with those pesky things is see if you can go round all the bed frame with something, get in all the tiny nooks and crannies.
Before you put the new mattress in make sure you kill off all the bugs.
Makes you wonder about who was living there before and the conditions they were living in YUK!!

If your apt. is infested that bad you need to tell the landlord to exterminate the entire building. Talk to your neighbors and see if their place is as bad as yours.
If the whole building is infested then just spraying your apt. will do no good.

good luck

A homeless shelter I know of once got bedbugs, and they had to put everyone’s stuff in a large industrial-type freezer for a certain amount of time to kill them.

I’m not sure what state you live in, but I think tenants have the right to withhold rent payments if the apartment is uninhabitable. I think that would include a pest problem like bedbugs.
