Question by Gordon L:
can bed bugs travel home with you?

We just spend eight days at Sandals in st lucia, and were attacked by bed bugs for the first few nights until they changed out the mattress. Can these critters hitch a ride home and infest our house now. We are leaving our luggage in the garage until we figure this out. Oh, and The “Fabulous” Sandals Grand in St Lucia is a miserable place to spend a week.

Yes they can. That’s how they’ve ended up at so many hotels in the U.S. — particularly the east coast. People are bringing them from their homes.

Yes it is possible to bring them home in or on your luggage. When you go to a hotel NEVER put your luggage on the bed. This will keep the little bugs from hitchhiking a ride home with you but it will also prevent you from infesting the hotel if you have them at home.
Call an exterminator. They can be gotten rid of if they are in your home and they might give you suggestions about how to kill them in your luggage.

It is not the first time I heard that the Sandals Hotels have problems with hygienic matters.
Thanks we donĀ“t have that problem in Puerto Plata Dom Rep., Here the hygenic control is very strict ( like in the USA and Europe)

Yes they can….that is how they get into private homes – from traveling from hotels [and the US is just as bad if not worse than the Caribbean]

Best thing to do is delouse your suitcases after washing ALL clothing with hot water
