You can exterminate bed bugs without a professional although not recommended as it is hard work and you need to know where to look. Professionals and people that do it yourself should expect to apply 2 to 3 treatments (just repeat directions below).

Just be prepared for some hard work, and be sure to purchase the right products. Specific steps are from the http://www.bed-bugs-handbook.com/eliminating-bed-bugs.html which include:

1. Wash everything you can in hot water followed by 20 to 30 min in the dryer. Transport item in a plastic bag to avoid dropping any bed bugs
2. Vacuum the mattress, box spring, baseboard etc.. Use the crevice tool. With a brush or hair dryer on heat setting, you might be able to get bed bugs to move out of hiding. Vacuum them up as they run.
3. Use a knock down spray to kill bed bugs and bed bug eggs in all mattress seams and tufts
2. Use a residual spray for longer lasting protection by spraying along baseboard, underneath night table drawers etc. Inspect all items inside drawers and dispose of any items
3. If you have a hand steamer, steam all seams, tufts etc. High heat kills bed bugs
3. Encase the mattress and box spring (after spray/steam dry
5. Vacuum/Steam clean carpets – consider adding a disinfectant to carpet fluid (test for color staining)
7. Dispose of all clutter.

If you are not going to do all of these things, then your chances of removing an infestation are greatly reduced. If you can only afford one product, then buy a high quality knock down spray. Recommendations and detailed instructions for getting rid of bed bugs are in the resource. You can save money by buying a bed bug kit. The second resource lists some good kits and can answer any specific questions.

http://www.badbedbugs.com This is a good link. Asking someone in a store that sells bug sprays about what to use to kill bed bugs would be good.
