Question by G lady09′:
Apartment building has bed bugs..how can i get out of lease?

the apartment building i live in has bed bugs, however my apartment does not have them(yet) and hopefully not ever. My question is should i call the city inspectors? and can i get out of my lease for this problem and a whole list of other problems? If so how do i go about the right steps the right way so im not screwing myself in the long run?

You can’t get out until you give the landlord a chance to fix the problems. You need to put him on notice of what the problems are and then let him fix them. If the landlord does not fix the problems after you have made him aware then you might have a case that the apt. is not habitable.

the question more is “do you like where you live?” If so then report it to the landlord. Bedbugs have made a comeback and they are everywhere now, people pick them up in hotels/motels, you can bring them in with the grocery bags and to get rid of them they have now determined that overheating them kills them. But if there is an infestation then you must get rid of that bedding to get rid of those bedbugs. Because it is a problem that the landlord should take care of like calling an esterminator that will use the new methods for removal, I don’t believe you can get out of your lease.

The way we do it here is to notify the landlord of the problems and if they are severe enough (like AC or heat, or water) then you can pay the court instead of the landlord until the problem has been corrected. Tell us the rest of the list.

If you call the city inspectors they will probably tell you that bedbugs are everywhere today and it’s a landlord problem….and if you call the city inspectors more than likely the landlord will not renew your lease when it runs out and by then the problems could have been solved so you would be leaving a decent apartment only to spend more on downpayment and such for another apartment.
