Do I have bedbugs?

in Bedbug Questions

Question by theartofsong:
Do I have bedbugs?

I went with my daughter last week to a hotel on a complimentary single mother’s retreat that my community organized. i kept a lookout for any signs of bedbugs in the hotel and on our skin. no bites. yesterday however my daughter had a tiny red bitemark on her wrist. this morning there was another one on her tummy which is often exposed when she sleeps (she likes to see her belly button). none of the pictures i found on line look like her bites but i only found pictures of sever large amounts of bites from a full blown infestation, no little new bites.
the bite was red, not particularly inflamed and seems painless. can someone tell me how to tell if i brought home a stowaway or if this is something else?
what are crabs?
i don’t see how it could be fleas. there were no animals at the hotel and i don’t have pets.

I used to work in an adult home for mentally ill adults. They constantly had bed bugs. The residents would get several large clusters of bites all over their stomach and ankles. They were very itchy. There is OTC powder that you can use if it is bed bugs, but it sounds as if it is not. Sounds like it might be a flea bite actually. I would wash everything you had at the hotel tough, just to be safe.

Bedbugs are extremely shy parasites that live in the mattress, and only come out to feed once every week or so, so it is doubtful you brought them home with you. They rarely come out from their hiding spot.

Next time you travel, and stay at a hotel, lift the sheet, and check the seem along the side of the mattress. If you see black specs along the seem, this is a clear sign of bedbugs. Ask for another room, or stay elsewhere.
