To keep a new matress like new, you can purchase special matress covers that allergy sufferers like to use (and they’re not plasticy/crinkely).
By encasing your pillows and mattress these covers prevent dust mites, their broken down body parts, eggs and excrements to cause allergic symptoms. So if you can keep them out from the beginning, all the better.
Another thing that helps is to wash your bed linnens weekly. Very easy to do if you have two sets of sheets per bed, because then you can immediately put a fresh sheet back onto your bed while your other set is in the washer/dryer.
Then I’d also recommend vacuuming your mattress monthly or at least quarterly. A good time to do this is when you do your regular mattress turning (to keep your mattress feeling like new longer).
For the first three months after purchase, turn your mattress monthly; thereafter, every 90 days. Also, remember to rotate your boxspring twice a year.
