Bed Bugs Spreading Apartment to Apartment?

in Bedbug Questions

Question by Lana:
Bed Bugs Spreading Apartment to Apartment?

The epidemic of bed bugs may be reaching all the way to my city. I, of course, am concerned and totally freaked out I might end up contracting them.

I am wondering about the bed bugs spreading from apartment to apartment. I live in a high rise building, where I am surrounded on both sides by other apartments. To the best of my knowledge, these apartments and their tenants are clean, but what if they’re not? Can bed bugs spread from another living space just by sharing a wall?

No. They are transferred by soft materials like carpets, furniture and sheets.

Yes they can get from one apartment to another. Usually when bedbugs are reported in one apartment, the pest control people will treat the apartments to the sides and above and below it as well.

Don’t freak out too seriously here. Bed bugs don’t really hurt you horribly. They are mostly a psychological freak out.

If you want to you can read about them here:

A tip to help you avoid them: Don’t bring used furniture or clothing into your house from unknown sources.

Talk to your apartment manager and ask if they’ve had bed bugs in the building. Most apartments building managers will usually call in pest control to handle an outbreak and get them eliminated as soon as they know about them. Canadian Pest Control is very good at dealing with them apparently.

The trick with bed bugs is that if the space is sprayed to kill the adults, two weeks later there could still be an outbreak of eggs that hatch out. So usually you get sprayed once, then two weeks later another spraying. Good mattress and bed spring covers help and there are little bootie things that can be put under the bed legs to stop them climbing up the bed legs.

Sorry if you are totally creep-ed out but I think I’ve answered the question.
