How rapidly do bedbugs spread through apartments?

in Bedbug Questions

Question by Wide eyed:
How rapidly do bedbugs spread through apartments?

A unit in my building may (probably) have bedbugs. I want to move. I am curious how quickly bedbugs spread through units and how worried I should be that they may be in my possessions already. I am not next to or above the unit by I am somewhat near it and very concerned.
Should I be concerned enough to put my things in cold storage just in case before taking them to my new dwelling?

Maybe someone with experience with bedbugs in their building or someone in pest management could offer me some advice here.

10 points to BA, and thanks SO much to anyone who offers with advice.
Specifically, what are the chances of them spreading rapidly from unit to unit in a few days?
I have a place to go that does not have them, thanks.

Again, I would like to hear from someone with some experience.
Thanks Lar,

There are bedbugs, they haven’t been here that long though(it’s a relatively new tenant) and it’s only the one guy complaining of them as far as I know (and I had to be sneaky about getting the info cause the building manager didn’t want to tell me).
Also – can they travel through the heating system (entering in a heater in his apartment and migrating here through mine)?

There’s no answer to this question since we haven’t had to deal with bedbugs in many years in this country. It’s unlikely you can out run the bedbug problem. It’s everywhere in the whole country and not likely to stop any time soon. Even putting your things in storage probably wouldn’t work since anyone else using the unit could have bedbugs. Anywhere you move to might have them as well and you’d never know it. We have become very unrealistic in thinking we can avoid bugs or germs or illnesses. It’s just not facing facts. The bugs always win.

What do you think? Answer below.

it depends on how bad the infestation was when discovered…if it was a case where a few weeks after a trip the people found their BB’s they may of not spread at all…if it is a possibility that they had them for over a year and just recently discovered what they had then they could of been spread quite a ways from their apartment. Though bedbugs are definitely on the rise, nine times out of ten (probably closer to 999 times out of a 1000) when people feel they have bed bugs it will be something else.
