Question by Joe M:
Should I worry about bedbugs in New York?

I may be going to New York City in February and I’m terrified of bedbugs. Am I right to be worried? How can I prevent bedbugs from “following” me back to my home in Atlanta?

I heard so many stories about new york bedbugs.

Just try to stay away from new york hotel beds, and if you do use a hotel, try to choose one of decent quality. Also try and request new sheets if you wish.

Movie theaters may also be a possible risk. if you are a big movie goer and plan to see a movie during your stay, don’t worry. Just know that theater seats are furniture and therefore hold some possibility of containing bedbugs. I’m sure they clean those chairs every once in a while…

When you return home to Atlanta, don’t throw your clothes down on a couch or bed, put them straight in the laundry or washing machine just for safety measures. A lot of bedbugs are brought home this way.

* Put your stuff in SpaceBag or similar bags. They keep bugs out.
* Wash & dry your clothes before going home. The Dryer will kill them in the process.
* Vacuum your luggage once you get home and store away from the bedroom.

Almost forgot, if the vacuum uses a bag, please toss it out.
Any eggs can hatch in 28 days and feed on skin you vacuum up.
Clean any canister (outside) along with washable filters.

If you are visiting, use a luggage rack or store suitcases in the bathroom. The little buggers cant climb metal and dont walk far. The suggestion about tossing everything in the wash and dry when returning home is good too. Remember, the bugs can be found ANYWHERE, so that 5 star hotel may have em and the no-tell motel might not. Heck, the newest place they were found was at the opera house. If you presume you have come in contact with them and take the proper precautions when you get home, you’ll be fine. The bug bites themselves are annoying but they do not carry disease like roaches or mosquitos.

They die over 120 degrees (F). Launder. Check mattress for blood trails.
