How rapidly do bedbugs spread through apartments?

in Bedbug Questions

Question by Wide eyed:
How rapidly do bedbugs spread through apartments?

A unit in my building may (probably) have bedbugs. I want to move. I am curious how quickly bedbugs spread through units and how worried I should be that they may be in my possessions already. I am not next to or above the unit by I am somewhat near it and very concerned.
Should I be concerned enough to put my things in cold storage just in case before taking them to my new dwelling?

Maybe someone with experience with bedbugs in their building or someone in pest management could offer me some advice here.

10 points to BA, and thanks SO much to anyone who offers with advice.
They aren’t in my unit, I haven’t seen one. Yet.

I just want to know from someone how quick they spread in their experience.
Saw the exterminator today and thats why I’m freaking out.
I guess what I want to know is, can they spread rapidly in a few days from unit to unit?
drjustin – thanks, I’m just concerned because a lot of people do live in my building and there’s carpet throughout and I’m getting super paranoid about transporting them with me :\
Can’t they spread through the heating system?

It depends on who’s in that apartment, what they do about the problem, etc. It also depends on where they walk, thus leaving some sort of trail of bedbugs as they go. Eventually they might spread, as per your fear. Sorry I’m no specialist in pest management.
What you could do is to constantly clean your apartment (hard floors with mr clean and other cleansers, rug with vacuum cleaner), beware of what you do with your laundry and/or shoes, and constantly be on the lookout for any infestations in your own apartment.
Hope this helps, but give the 10 points to a better answer. I don’t have experience with bedbugs (nor do I hope to have) my knowledge comes from books and stuff.
🙂

Not if you don’t come into contact with them or carry them around. They are transported mostly by humans, since they probably can’t walk very fast. Thus you would have to come into contact with another object/thing/person that came into contact with the bearer of those things. It all depends on how much traffic there is in your apartment and how soon they are transported.
Like I mentioned, as long as you keep on the lookout and be precautious, It isn’t likely to happen.

I doubt it, since the heating system has air filters throughout. They generally tend to cling to something soft.
