Diatomaceous earth is perfectly harmless to humans and pets. It is a very fine dust made of microscopic silicon. Microscopic gold algae (Diatoms) living in the ocean have a silicon coat. When the diatom dies, the soft body rots out leaving the very hard silicon coat, which falls to the ocean floor. This material, now called diatomaceous earth is mined by the ton. When any insect comes in contact with this material, it draws out the moisture in its body and it dies. It is not toxic or poisonous to humans or pets.

While diatomaceous earth is certainly harmless for humans to touch, I’m not so sure about breathing.

Essentially, the silica shells of the diatoms that make up the powder are very, very fine powdered glass.

I definitely would not recommend breathing large quantities of it.
