Bedbug Pest Control

in About Bedbugs

There is no magic solution to bedbug pest control treatments. All you need to do to get started is:

  • A flashlight
  • Basic tools to open outlets
  • Products to kill them
  • A deep inspection of your home
  • Most of all, the ability to repeat the process as many times as it takes

If you are unable or unwilling to do all of the above, you should bring in a professional immediately. The good news, should you choose to undergo bedbug pest control yourself, is that you do not have to purchase strong poisons to get the job done. There are many products on the market that are non-toxic, for human and pets at least. Most are mixed with water and can even be applied directly to areas where you sleep. The only negative is that they are not residual products, meaning they do not have long lasting effects and have to be reapplied often.

One of the most effective things you can do is a deep vacuuming of the entire home. The vacuum will not only get the adult bedbugs, but by using the attachments you can really get inside to dislodge the eggs too. All bedding and clothing should be laundered if you can, or at least run through a dryer as long as it gets up to 120 degrees for at least an hour. Investing in a thermometer to place inside the dryer is the best way to ensure it is getting hot enough to kill the bedbugs.

You will also want to invest in plastic covers that zip to put over your box spring and mattress. This will lock in any bedbugs that you may have missed. The covers should be left on for at least two years since bedbugs are able to go up to 18 months in between feedings. One big mistake people make is to forget about anything on the walls. You need to look behind all pictures, mirrors, and art. Be sure to inspect any wood frames carefully. Any cloth wall hangings need to be washed, run through the dryer, or dry cleaned. Also, do not forget the curtains and blinds.

Since bedbugs are attracted to heat, it is also important to look inside any electrical appliances including televisions, radios, clocks and even game consoles. Every crack and crevice in all the furniture and property inside your home needs to be thoroughly inspected. A reliable way to check your thoroughness is to use double sided tape placed on the floor all around beds, the mattress and on the headboards. Also, the legs of any tables and bed frames. If the infestation is bad, you will also want to place it around the couch as well. If you catch any bedbugs, then you will want to start the pest control process all over again.
